Traditional Spanish Retablo Painting

Retablos are devotional paintings of religious figures on wood panels. This course includes researching the history and study of traditional retablos and artists.

Students will learn:

• Drawing religious figures and saints
• Using watercolors to paint figures
• Using commercial or homemade gesso
• Studying natural organic and inorganic pigments
• Preparing wood panels for painting
• Painting a retablo with natural pigments
• Varnishing a completed painted panel with commercial or homemade varnishes

Heritage Arts Woodworking

Spanish Colonial Woodworking

Part 2: Late Summer Return & Harvest

In Part 1 on June 27, we transplanted and tended warm-season herbs, annual flowers, landrace beans and squash, and harvested amaranth greens — learning the stories of these plants as we worked alongside them. 

In Part 2 on September 5, we return to the garden as the season shifts toward harvest. We'll work with amaranth, papalo, epazote, landrace squash and beans, and other herbs, focusing on harvest and drying methods, as well as saving and storing seed. Participants will be able to take home what we harvest!

Each class stands on its own, but together they tell the full story of a season.
