Biography

I always had a keen interest in the sciences, and after graduating with my first Master’s degree, I joined the Air Force in a health and safety role. Through that role I became very interested in radiation safety in particular, so took the opportunity to obtain a second masters in Nuclear Engineering with a focus on the safety aspects of nuclear operations. I also changed my specialty in the Air Force specifically to Health Physics, and spent the next years primarily developing plans for radiation emergency response. After the Air Force I went back to school, to obtain a Ph.D. and then began teaching at Northern in 2019.  My wife and I currently live in Santa Fe.

How did you discover Northern?

One of my doctoral advisors functions as an informal clearinghouse for radiation safety employers, so once he heard about the position, and knowing my interest in teaching, he linked us up. Once I checked out Northern I knew I was headed there if at all possible!

What are some of the highlights of your career?

A lot of my career has revolved around emergency response, especially planning for disasters. Seeing people respond well to disasters using tools I helped develop is always a source of pride, and I was able to play (very small) roles in the national response to several large disasters.

What most excites you about your field?

This field is not one that people dream of in elementary school (I wanted to be an astronaut), and even people entering the field don’t necessarily grasp how complex and interesting it is. Watching students learn this field and actually start to get interested in the concepts is always exciting to me
